KTA18 Thermo-acoustic Stirling Engine

The Kontax Thermo-acoustic Stirling Engine is a fascinating device. It differs from conventional Stirling engines in that it has no moving displacer to shuttle the air inside backwards and forwards between the hot and cold zones. Instead, it relies on a sound wave to do the displacement. This engine operates from a small methylated spirit (denatured alcohol) burner.

This engine has been meticulously engineered. Because there is only one connecting rod, backlash and drag is effectively halved in comparison with a conventional hot air engine. The absence of a phased displacer also means that this engine is multi-directional, it can operate with the flywheel rotating either way. The engine is supplied in self-assembly kit form, complete with detailed instructions and tools. Instructions are supplied on CD, access to computer is therefore required during assembly.
